Frequently Asked Questions

What is Séance?

Séance is a mobile app that lets you have AI-powered conversations with history's greatest philosophers. Each philosopher responds in their own voice and style, drawing on their actual published works for accuracy.

How does it work?

When you send a message, Séance searches the philosopher's real texts to find relevant passages, then uses AI to generate a response that stays true to their ideas and writing style. This technique is called Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).

Is it free?

Yes! You get 20 free message credits when you open the app — no account required. You can register for an account to get additional credits.

Which philosophers are available?

We currently have 14 philosophers spanning over 2,500 years: Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, Confucius, René Descartes, Friedrich Nietzsche, Mary Wollstonecraft, Simone de Beauvoir, Hannah Arendt, Seneca, Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, Immanuel Kant, and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. More are on the way.

How accurate are the responses?

Every response is grounded in the philosopher's actual writings through our RAG pipeline. While AI-generated responses are interpretive by nature, they are anchored to real source material rather than invented from scratch.

Do I need to create an account?

No. You can start chatting immediately as an anonymous user with 20 free credits. Creating an account lets you save your chat history and get more credits.

What platforms is Séance available on?

Séance is built with Flutter and is available on iOS and Android, with a web version planned.

How do I get more message credits?

Register for a free account to receive additional credits. We're also working on premium plans for users who want unlimited conversations.
